My Punishment Is Greater Than I Can Bear

My Punishment Is Greater Than I Can Bear
Genesis 4:1-17

Cain’s Sin

• Cain’s first sin was offering and unacceptable sacrifice which was not offered by faith and thus rejected
o By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. (Hebrew 11:4)
• Cain’s second sin was to dishonour God

• Cain’s third sin was pride

• Cain’s fourth sin was selfishness

• Cain’s fifth sin was covetousness (he coveted Abel’s acceptance)

• Cain’s sixth sin was anger

• Cain’s seventh sin was hatred

• Cain’s eighth sin was the cold blooded murder of his brother Abel

• Cain’s ninth sin was to dishonour his father and mother

• Cain’s tenth sin was lying to God

o We sin multiple times against God in our lives. There is no hiding from this fact for our sins cry out against us.

Cain’s Punishment
• God Punished Cain for his crimes
• Cain was bitterly cursed from the earth
• Cain was to be a fugitive and a vagabond (an outcast) for the rest of his life
• Cain’s sin completely disrupted his life

o God’s punishment for our sins is just

Cain’s Reaction
• Cain never apologises or asks forgiveness for the murder of Abel
• Cain complains to God that his punishment is greater than he can bear
• Cain builds a city in direct rebellion to the will and word of God
• Cain’s punishment may have been greater than he could bear but it did not change his behaviour in the least.

o God’s punishment is indeed greater than we can bear. But will the prospect of eternal punishment in hell be enough for us to allow God to change our behaviour through the shed blood of the Lamb of God without blemish and without spot, that is Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

Sunday Evening Sermon - Is Jesus Mean? (3-4-12)

Is Jesus Mean?
Various Texts

 Is Jesus mean?

Whilst one should dismiss this thought entirely it is something I decided to investigate.

I chose the relationship between Jesus and Judas to test the question.

What follows are the results of my investigation.

Jesus knew Judas would betray Him and yet He never acted any differently towards him.

I)              Judas accompanies Jesus with the other 11 disciples, beholding our Lord’s character and power, and hearing Him teach and claim to be the Messiah (Mark 3:14).
II)            Jesus used Judas, along with the other disciples, to preach that the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 10:4-7)
III)          Jesus allowed Judas alone to guard their treasury, even though he knew him to be a thief (John 12:6)
IV)          Jesus kneeled before Judas and washed His and the others feet as if He, Jesus, were the servant and not the master (John 13:1-5)
V)            Jesus declared knowledge of Judas’ betrayal to all the disciples and thus affirmed the free will given to all to accept or reject (John 13:26-27)
VI)          Jesus called Judas, “friend” in the very act of betrayal (Matthew 26:48-50)

All four Gospel writers record the account of Judas’ betrayal. This is an unusual as John typically did not follow the same pattern as the other three. The betrayal of Jesus is absolutely critical to the Gospel story. But Judas needn’t have been at the heart of it.

I believe we are being given insight to the heart of our Saviour. Far from mean, He is the epitome of kind, longsuffering, compassionate love towards a wicked and perverse world.

App of the Week

Do your circumstances tempt you to doubt God’s love or control in your life? If so, choose verses from Romans 8:28-39 to memorise, meditate on, and pray about. Ask God to change your attitude. How can your actions and words reflect these truths about God?
